Welcome to the Levelland Middle ESL Department!

First, my name is Shay Johns. I teach the ELL class at Levelland Middle School. I have been teaching for 45 years. I am the only ESL/ELL instructor at Levelland Middle School. I love teaching and look forward to getting to know your children this year. We will be reading, speaking, listening, and writing quite a bit, and that provides many opportunities to get to know each other.

New to Levelland?

Levelland has many local services to help you and your family succeed in the community. From health care to social functions. Every semester I send out a newsletter with information about these services and how to contact them.

SRC

In this classroom, as well as the school and public libraries, your student can check out books to take home to read for SRC points. SRC (Scholastic Reading Counts) is a reading encouragement program our school makes available to help  students to read more on their own outside of academic studies. If you have books at home or find them at the public library, you can check if those books have SRC points at the link provided on the “Educational Websites” page to the left.

Online Resources

In my classroom, students use computers to supplement classroom learning. The computer programs we use can be used at home as well as at school. Those programs are “kids A-Z,” “Action Scholastic.com,” “Vocabulary.com,” and “The First 4,000 Words.” Links to all of these websites are on the “Educational Websites” page.

Tutorials

ACE is a free service provided by federal government grant funds. It provides after school activities for students at no cost to the parent. Its goal is to help students achieve academic success. In the middle school, one way this is done is by offering tutorial times in the morning and afternoons. Each teacher has individual hours for their tutorials, so students and parents should check with specific teachers. The library offers SRC testing during morning tutorials. Other tutorials include Read 180, Math 180, GEAR, D.I., and STAAR tutorials in Math, Science, English, and History. I offer ESL tutorials for my students, if tutorials are not required by another teacher that morning. My hours for tutorials are located in the sidebar window to the right.

Forgot your backpack?

I do offer school supplies to students that need them, because I believe that no child should have a bad day because they forgot their backpack at home. I also check out English/Spanish translators, electronic dictionaries, picture English/Spanish dictionaries, and English paper dictionaries to student for help with homework. These can be used at home.
